These ruins are to have been left behind by the pre-incan Moche civilisationand are thought to have been those of a religious centre. The Temple of the Sun is oppositeand in between the two was the citywhich like the temple was built out of mud bricks. The particularity of the site is to have been built in layers; new generations filled the temple with mud bricks and built a new one on top of it.
